Replacement Li Po or Li ion batteries on eBay may have been manufactured many years ago and sat in a hot warehouse over the summer months. All 3.7 V Lipo batteries should be compatible., Not necessarily ones that are marketed as PS3 replacement batteries. Consider buying a recently manufactured Lipo battery or from seller that guarantees battery capacity.

You can buy there is Lipo batteries already with a JST connector that fit the PS3 controller JST connector. Alternatively, you can cut the wires to your older battery, leaving in the JST connector to the PS3 controller, and manually tie the cuts wire terminals to the wires of the replacement battery.
